I do beseech that you
Not shrink from this love
I bear you; it's so unlearned,
It never covets, nor must be
Returned. So innocent,
So pure but yet remiss
In any sophistry; it never
Begs a kiss, or touch of hand!
But just that I may be
Allowed to...
Simply love you.

And do not fear that I
Seek such a role
As wife or mistress!
Even friendship would I
Soon forego, if you
Would have it so.
For rather would I be
The spring rain that
Caresses your dear hair;
The sun that lights your day,
The morning air you breathe.

Such harmless thoughts
Are these of which
This love is made...
You need not feel a burden!
Please... I pray you understand.
For in the matter of my own
Well-being I am wise,
And I should rather choose
Swift death and sure,
By your dear hand, than live
To see rejection in your eyes.
